Helpful Hints for Growing an Apartment Garden
Most folks who live in apartments have probably decided that it wouldn’t be practical to try to have any type of garden. Thinking this way has caused a lot of people to leave their apartments and relocate into a dwelling that has space outdoors for a garden. Many people hide their disappointment by investing in houseplants for their apartment.
Well, the good word is that you don’t have to move or "settle" for a houseplant or two. Even living in an apartment, it is very possible to have a garden. Keep reading and follow our tips and you, too, will be the proud owner of a flourishing apartment garden.
If you already have containers, or know what kind you want to purchase, pick plants that are suitable for these containers. Pay attention to the size of the plants as each one will have a specific size requirement for its container – from 1/2 wine barrels to antique tea cups. Choosing the containers you prefer lets you plan the ambiance you want to create with your indoors garden. What’s the point of only buying big pots when you can grow a smaller plant or flower that is just as attractive?
It won’t take much searching to find all the data and facts you need to learn how to do container gardening.
You have to choose your containers wisely, also, and be sure they are roomy enough for your plant’s growth. Your first reaction, if your apartment is very small, is to choose the smallest containers you can find. However, this is not always the best decision. For each plant, find a container that is a little bigger than what it is already in. This way your plants will have a better chance of actually taking root and growing well. A plant can easily become root bound when it is trying to grow in a container that’s too small. This is not a healthy environment for a plant and it can eventually die.
Here’s an idea for you to think about – if there’s a spot in your house that’s big enough, why not install a mini greenhouse? A lot of the time you will find mini greenhouses that are already pre-assembled. They are small enough to fit into an unused corner with no problem. If you prefer, you can find plans for a mini greenhouse online and build your own with parts that can be picked up cheaply at second hand stores, garage sales, or Goodwill. Using a greenhouse will enable you to grow a larger variety of plants indoors.
If you have a balcony you could even build one to fit into your balcony! There are so many different ways that you can grow a garden when you live in an apartment. You can find beautiful gardens in the homes of people who don’t have a balcony or patio to use. The trick is to do your homework, do your planning and practice some patience. You won’t plant a perfect garden with your first try. Just keep adjusting and your garden will be a success. Before you know it, if you put in the work and don’t give up, you will have the garden of your dreams. So stop lamenting the fact that you don’t have a garden and start researching what you need to do.
